This song was groundbreaking to me. I can’t claim to know the writer’s intent but it really made me realize that some people had problems that couldn’t be solved by a wave of a magic wand or prayer—which completely went against everything I had been taught up until that point. Realizing the lyrics in this song was one of many events that led me to believe the church I grew up in was using threats and fear to obtain a good position in some invisible and likely impertinent power struggle.
It was devastating, as a high school student, still a child, really, to see adults I had come to respect behaving so selfishly.
