But as he went about his life, dealing with trivialities such as cleaning, recycling, reorganizing, and grocery shopping, people a half a world away fought and died for their right to do the same.
He was no doubt more aware of the situation than some of his fellow citizens, but did that excuse his inaction?
He rationalized—what can I do?
Perhaps nothing. But he took a look at his life, and accomplished his chores in earnest. He readied his extra bed. He went back to work with a renewed sense of duty. He treated his loved ones with more respect, and elevated strangers to a new, esteemed place in his heart.
He was aware.
It was the best he could do; it was also the best he could do.
